Draft sanctions against Russia presented in the US Senate

Representatives of the Republican Party presented new legislative initiatives that propose imposing sanctions against Russia and participants in the Nord Stream 2 project, as well as providing additional financial assistance to Ukraine.

Draft laws similar in content were submitted to the US Senate and the House of Representatives. According to these documents, in the event of Russia’s invasion of Ukrainian territory, the United States must impose a number of sanctions restrictions against Nord Stream 2. It is also proposed to link the imposition of sanctions with the resumption of the gas pipeline certification process in Germany.

In addition, representatives of the Republican Party called for an additional $500 million aid package for Kiev. About $100 million of this amount is proposed to be spent on anti-aircraft, anti-tank and anti-ship systems.

Senators and congressmen also proposed the creation of a fund that would support Ukraine in “resisting attempts to occupy” its territory and help speed up the process of supplying weapons to Kiev, TASS reports.

Democrats have criticized the Republicans’ drafts, saying they have presented their own initiatives on sanctions instead of continuing consultations between parties on the issue.

“Republicans have opted for partisan posturing over trying to reach consensus on a comprehensive bipartisan proposal,” said Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez.
