German Chancellor Scholz arrives in Russia for talks with Putin

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has arrived in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is reported by DPA news agency.

The Kremlin reported that the parties would discuss topics on the bilateral and international agenda, including those related to providing Russia with legal security guarantees and settling the Ukrainian crisis.

As noted by Reuters, citing a source in the German government, Scholz intends to tell Putin that the buildup of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine can only be regarded as a threat. In addition, he will advise the Russian president not to underestimate the unity of the West on the Ukrainian issue and confirm his readiness to impose “painful sanctions” against Russia in the event of its invasion of Ukraine.
