Ukraine’s possible refusal to join the North Atlantic Alliance will not solve Russia’s security issue, political analyst Marat Bashirov has said. He also believes that such a move is unlikely because the idea was voiced by an ambassador who does not share the ideas of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s team.
“It should be understood that this is a private opinion of one Ukrainian ambassador who is not very friendly with Zelensky’s team. So the statement that sounded is not the position of Ukraine, this has to be understood. If such words had come from the lips of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the conversation would have been different. As for now, at best, it is just a ground check: he was tasked to say it and he said it. Nothing more,” said Bashirov.
The political technologist also noted that Russia’s security issues are not solved by Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO alone.
“Russia wants legal guarantees from NATO and the US. So the fact that Ukraine suddenly withdraws its application does not solve problems and does not give any guarantees,” Bashirov concluded.
