German political scientist Alexander Rahr said that France and Germany blocked the U.S. plan to admit Georgia and Ukraine to NATO, as they were aware of the risks that this step would bring to Europe
The expert believes that Paris and Berlin are more concerned about collective security in Europe than America and Britain, because they are neighbours of Russia.
“Germany then clearly argued why Ukraine and Georgia cannot join NATO. Merkel then said that these are fragmented states with ethnic and territorial problems. In addition, these are states where the majority of the population is not necessarily in favour of joining NATO. This was the case according to all opinion polls in Ukraine. She is aware of this”, – Rahr said.
The U.S. tried to “push” the admission of the two post-Soviet republics into NATO without any regard to the consequences of such a step for Europe, but Germany and France confirmed the rightness of their actions after the Georgian aggression against South Ossetia, concluded the political scientist
