Ukraine’s non-accession to the EU and NATO will reduce tensions – opinion

Journalist Clive Crook has suggested in an article for Bloomberg that Ukraine should not be admitted to NATO and the European Union to resolve the tense situation around the country

“Ukraine wants to join NATO and the EU. Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want it. NATO and the EU in their turn do not need it and do not want it in their ranks either, at least for the foreseeable future”, –  the author believes.

However, the public rhetoric of the leaders of these organizations says the opposite, which contradicts logic and influences the behaviour of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kruk argues.

“The EU is already overstretched and facing difficulties on the integration of Central European countries. It will be even worse with Ukraine”, –  the author warns.

Turkey, for example, has not joined the EU and does not seem to intend to, even though there have been talks for decades.

“The best way out of the crisis for Ukraine would be to be at arm’s length from Russia on the one hand and from NATO and the EU on the other, it will ensure it peace, prosperity and stability”, –  the author concludes.
