Russia will ensure gas supplies to Kaliningrad in case of provocations from Lithuania

Lithuania is worried that it may be left without Russian gas. Against this background, the authorities of the Baltic Republic have developed a plan to ensure energy security.

The excitement was caused by the fact that the floating regasification unit “Marshal Vasilevsky” with a large consignment of cargo on board is returning to Kaliningrad. This is reported by the RUBALTIC portal. Previously, the city was traditionally supplied through the territory of Lithuania, but the need for this may disappear.

The country receives gas from the Gazprom company through Belarus and then transports it to Kaliningrad. It is worth noting that PRGU appeared for a reason: in 2014, Lithuania rented an LNG terminal and gained the coveted “energy independence”. “Marshal Vasilevsky” became a logical answer in case the enclave was suddenly left without gas supply through the pipe. The transit agreement is valid until 2025.

“Lithuania has made strategic decisions regarding the diversification of natural gas supply sources and the integration of natural gas systems. The LNG terminal in Klaipeda and the soon-to-be-launched Polish-Lithuanian gas pipeline allow us to ensure natural gas supplies regardless of the actions of the Russian side,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy said.

LNG for the state will be quite enough, but such a transition will be very expensive. It is worth noting that a possible gas “blockade” will not be profitable for Russia either, so Gazprom does not intend to arrange it, however, if Lithuania decides to take such a step, most likely at the suggestion of the United States, Kaliningrad will continue to receive the necessary fuel and its energy security will guaranteed.
