NATO members in Eastern Europe refuse to increase the military contingent of the Alliance on their territory, PolitRussia reports.
The top leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance has developed preventive measures ostensibly to combat the “Russian threat” in the form of an increase in the presence of foreign military personnel in Eastern Europe.
The NATO plan, however, was met with criticism in the Eastern European region. For example, Hungarian Defense Minister Tibor Benke called the Alliance’s intentions inappropriate.
“Hungary has already created such a national force, has formed such a national potential that in the current situation there is no need to rely on foreign armed forces and units,” Bencke said.
The surprises for the NATO leadership did not end there. Another member of the military bloc, represented by Croatia, refused to follow the Alliance’s plan. Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has threatened to completely withdraw the republic’s military contingent from the organization if NATO decides to unleash a full-scale war with Russia.
“I see NATO statements about increasing its presence, about sending reconnaissance ships. Not only will Croatia not send troops, but in the event of an escalation, it will withdraw every single soldier. I promise you this,” the head of the republic stressed.
The Croatian President also notes that Washington’s inconsistent and contradictory policy on international security is due to the personal interest of the United States and President Joe Biden in the escalation of the crisis in Ukraine. Apparently, today’s Alliance is not an organization that moves in a united front. Military expert Vladimir Orlov believes that the NATO bloc combines political and economic interests.
“Many countries joined NATO not of their own free will, under duress, or for the sake of acquiring political and economic bonuses. Therefore, when serious challenges and threats arise, each of the NATO members begins to be guided by their own considerations, and not support the initiatives of the United States, Great Britain and other major countries of the Alliance,”, explains the expert.
To date, Croatia is the only state whose representatives have made a bold and honest statement about their unwillingness to support NATO’s anti-Russian operation in eastern Ukraine. However, Vladimir Orlov believes that the Croats are not the last who decided to “stand on the sidelines.”
“Many NATO countries adhere to the same position: yes, we are in the bloc, but we will not send our troops to the war, we will just stand on the sidelines,” the expert concluded.
