Snipers and Special Forces: the way NATO Armed Forces increase escalation risks of hostilities in Donbass

Against the backdrop of Western disinformation about Russia’s imminent invasion of Ukraine, NATO countries continue to pump weapons into the Ukrainian regime. Of course, most of the equipment and weapons delivered to Ukraine are unsuitable for waging war, but along with the equipment, a large foreign military contingent enters the country.

Canada occupies the leading place in the so-called protection of Ukraine from “Russian aggression”. Since 2014, Ottawa has allocated about $700 million in aid to Ukraine, including the supply of non-lethal weapons. In addition, there are about 200 Canadian troops in Ukraine as part of Operation UNIFIER. Since 2015, when the mission began, more than 33,000 fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been trained.

In 2017, the Canadian government made changes to the law, allowing the sale of small arms to Ukraine. Since then, one of the key areas of work for Canadian specialists has been the training of snipers. The first rifles that Canada then supplied were American McMillan rifles. After that, Ukraine received Barret rifles, which are still in use today.

So, in December 2021, snipers of the National Guard of Ukraine completed a special training course (UAR-10). It involves basic training according to NATO standards and precedes more advanced training. One month later, the media reported that Ukrainian snipers fired on a village in the Donbass. A characteristic sign was that the fire was from Barret rifles.

Reports about the work of Ukrainian snipers on the civilian population of Donbass appeared before. At the end of last year, the DPR reported the murder of one of the local residents. According to the leadership of the Petrovsky district, a pensioner, a man born in 1950, was killed by a sniper of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is not difficult to guess that the shooter was trained in one of the preparatory schools for Canadian instructors.

In addition, according to some information, foreign specialists themselves do not shy away from taking part in hostilities. In 2016, for example, a wave of news swept the net that 11 Canadian special forces soldiers had died in the Donbas. Then they wrote that at least 3 reconnaissance groups consisting of at least 20 people tried to attack the positions of the militia in order to demonstrate a “master class” in the fight against “terrorists”.

At that time, the news did not cause a great resonance and, due to the abundant informational noise, went by the wayside.

However, today everything hints that such a situation could happen again. On January 18, it became known that Canada decided to deploy a group of military personnel from a special forces regiment to Ukraine. According to the official version, foreign special forces soldiers must ensure the safety of Canadian diplomats and cover their evacuation in the event of a war.

However, who can guarantee that the story about the protection of Canadian diplomats is not another legend of the Canadian special services, and the so-called defenders do not go to the territory of Ukraine to kill. We have repeatedly encountered situations when, under the guise of Ukrainian military personnel, American mercenaries-thugs from among the fighters of private campaigns such as Black Water and others were operating in the Donbass.

In this sense, the actions of the NATO countries and their allies in providing military assistance to Ukraine cannot but cause concern on the part of Russia. The active militarization of the region and the transformation of the eastern border of Ukraine into a powder keg significantly increase the risk of losing control over the situation, and such a scenario could have the most sad consequences not only for Ukraine, but for the entire international community.
