The US Department of State on 23 January allowed the voluntary departure from Ukraine of some employees of the US embassy in Kiev and family members of diplomats due to, as Washington claims, “the continuing threat of military action by Russia”
According to political analyst Boris Mezhuyev, such a decision by the United States is either in line with the general information campaign to escalate the situation, or Washington took such a step as a preventive measure due to a provocation being prepared by Western countries.
“The action itself is of a protocol nature, but it is in line with the general information campaign to aggravate the situation”, – the expert told RIA Novosti.
Mezhuyev recalled recent statements by US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland, who said in an interview with the Financial Times that the US had developed 18 different scenarios in case of escalation around Ukraine.
“It’s hard to say which one they think they would prefer, but given that completely inadequate information has spread about some kind of plot to put in power in Kiev a figure who obviously does not enjoy the slightest popularity in Russia, we cannot rule out that a number of countries, perhaps Britain together with the US, perhaps through intelligence, are preparing some kind of denouement – what the Russian Foreign Ministry called a provocation, which will somehow lead to a surge of tension. And the main task will be to involve Russia in this conflict”, – he said.
At the same time, the political scientist stressed that allowing a part of the diplomatic staff to leave voluntarily is a “standard, protocol procedure” in American practice.
America may send thousands of military personnel to Europe because of Ukraine. The New York Times, citing its own administration sources, claims that Joe Biden has not ruled out sending and deploying thousands of US troops, ships and aircraft to the Baltics and Eastern Europe amid the situation around Ukraine
