The New York Times, citing its own administration sources, claims that Joe Biden has not ruled out sending and deploying a thousand US troops, ships and aircraft to the Baltics and Eastern Europe amid the situation around Ukraine.
According to the paper, on Saturday, senior Pentagon officials presented Biden with several options for action. Among them is to send 1,000 to 5,000 troops to Eastern Europe, with the possibility of “ten times that number” if the situation deteriorates. Former and active servicemen said that these could include air defence, artillery, engineering and logistics forces.
According to anonymous sources, Biden may make a decision as early as this week. According to them, some of the military would then be redeployed from America and the rest from other parts of Europe. So far, none of the options under consideration involve sending troops to Ukraine.
Moscow has repeatedly rejected accusations of “aggressive actions”, stressing that it does not threaten or intend to attack anyone. Western claims of “Russian aggression” have been used as a pretext to deploy more NATO military equipment near Russia’s borders.
Earlier it was reported that US civil servants at the Kiev embassy are leaving Ukraine.
