UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged to avoid escalation around Ukraine and stressed that the situation should be resolved through diplomatic methods.
“Obviously my message is that there should be no military intervention in this context. I believe that the way to solve problems is diplomacy. Of course, any invasion by any country into another country is contrary to international law. I hope this does not happen under the current circumstances,” Guterres said at a press conference, TASS reports.
According to the UN Secretary General, negotiations between Russia and the United States can significantly reduce tensions. Guterres stressed that the de-escalation and end of this crisis are fundamentally important goals of diplomacy.
“Our main goal is not to have to use emergency plans. Of course, in all cases, in all parts of the world, if there are risks, we take certain measures to protect ourselves. This is done in many parts of the world. At this time, I insist that we all must do our part to avoid a confrontation that will be extremely negative for everyone and to create the conditions for a diplomatic solution,” concluded Guterres.
