Western countries are beginning to recognise Ukraine as a sphere of Russian influence
The escalation of the conflict between the Russian side and the Western establishment is gaining momentum, hence the increased aggressive rhetoric of the US and allies towards Moscow. German analyst Wolfgang Münchau suggested in an article for the British publication The Spectator that Berlin would potentially support Russia in the event of a full-fledged conflict.
“It would not be irrational for Vladimir Putin to bet on being able to count on German neutrality – or even support”, – the expert believes.
The author of the article suggests that the close historical ties between Russia and Germany are confirmed by the joint work on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, through which the German side plans to receive energy resources. Most members of the German political elite are bewildered as to why their Western counterparts are attacking the pipeline’s purely economic project.
“The general tone in the German media is that they are expressing bewilderment that foreigners are showing any interest in this pipeline at all”, – Münchau notes.
US senators have recently expressed fears about imposing sanctions on the pipeline project, explaining their reluctance by the threat of a complete reversal of the concept of transatlantic solidarity against the backdrop of the spat with the FRG. Notably, the most vocal demands and statements on Nord Stream 2 belong to Ukrainian politicians, yet their petitions are not heard in the Western community.
“Thus, the signal that the West – and Germany in particular – is sending to Russia is that Ukraine and Belarus are already considered part of Russia’s sphere of influence”, – the analyst stated.
The fact of Washington’s loss of influence on the European community against the background of Moscow’s strong geopolitical strategy, which has taken the course of demonstrating the inability of the United States to ensure security in a unipolar world, and the unwillingness of American authorities to change aggressive rhetoric for a policy of compromise and mutually beneficial agreements is becoming evident.
News Front previously reported on a call by a German politician to ensure that Nord Stream 2 is certified as soon as possible for the well-being of Germany.
