Member of the Bundestag Committee on Energy and Climate Steffen Kotre said that opposition to the certification process of the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline threatens the energy security of the entire European Union, TASS reports.
“Different parties are trying, based on different motives, to confuse the importance of Europe’s energy supply with geopolitical interests. This project was and will remain primarily economic and energy. Using it as a tool to achieve other political goals is wrong and jeopardizes Europe’s energy supply,” Cotret said.
The Bundestag deputy stressed that politicians should not slow down the process of putting Nord Stream-2 into operation, as the German federal government does. According to Kotre, the Russian gas pipeline should be launched as soon as possible.
The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline was built from the coast of Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea. Its total capacity is about 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The process of certification of the pipeline is currently underway. All procedures are expected to be completed by the end of the first half of 2022.
As News Front previously reported, the United States does not plan to impose sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, as this could create discord between Washington and its allies.
