German politicians do not perceive Ukraine as a “great cultural European nation” and continue to ignore its interests, said the Ukrainian ambassador from Germany Andriy Melnyk.
“The biggest challenge, in my opinion, is that Ukraine is still not fully understood, the Germans sometimes believe that the FRG can easily afford not to take into account our interests as a subject of international politics,” the diplomat said in an interview with Ukrinform.
According to him, the main reason for this was the fact that Ukraine “did not bother to declare itself as a great cultural European nation” and “an influential subject of history.”
Melnik delved into fantasies and stated that Kiev should ensure that “Ukrainian composers become an integral part of the repertoire of German opera houses, and the works of Ukrainian writers are studied in German schools.”
“As long as our history is viewed through the prism of Russia […] all our political demands will meet with the same restrained reaction,” the diplomat concluded.
