The biography of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz creates a theory about his work for Moscow, PolitRussia reports.
The German publication Die Welt, citing secret data from the Ministry of State Security of the German Democratic Republic, stated that the current head of the German state at the beginning of his political path was under the strong influence of the USSR. Youthful sympathies towards the GDR may give the opponents of the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz a pretext to inflate the anti-Russian conspiracy theory about the collusion of the German guarantor with Russia.
Leading researcher at the Center for German Studies at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, political scientist Alexander Kamkin expressed the opinion that the past of the chancellor will not harm his career.
“Given that Olaf Scholz has already reached the peak of his career as a German politician, I do not think that the revealed details will greatly affect his future. Moreover, in the current political realities of Germany, the left trend is very fashionable. And the left leaning of the Social Democrats is fairly constant and stable. Passions about the GDR and the SPD have long subsided”, the expert believes.
According to the author of the article in Die Welt, Alan Posener, Scholz’s trips to the GDR during the years of divided Germany could have formed the future chancellor’s sympathy for the communists and socialists, in particular, for Russia. Rivals of the head of Germany are already accusing their guarantor of working for the Kremlin and supporting the Russian Nord Stream-2 pipeline.
“It must be admitted that these revealed details from Scholz’s biography can theoretically be reduced to a conspiracy theory. Allegedly, even then he came into contact with the USSR and continues to work for Moscow today. Moreover, today it is very fashionable to accuse Russia of all kinds of sins and interference. Although I don’t think it will be massive,” Kamkin said.
Anti-Russian sentiment in Germany has always been expressed in a different way than in the European Union and the United States, and recent trends raise hopes that Europe’s leading economic power will sober up from Washington’s myth of “Russian aggression.” Details in the biography of the current chancellor of Germany can cause an attack of German nostalgia for Soviet times and the GDR, the political scientist believes.
“Given how Scholz was promoted before the elections, it is unlikely that this could become compromising evidence. Moreover, in principle, he is pursuing a rather balanced policy, without any sharp deviations to the left or right. And his past and interest in him, in my opinion, reflect internal German cultural realities: a special attitude towards the GDR, a special attitude in divided Germany. Until now, many Germans are quite dramatic about those times. On the one hand, there is nostalgia for socialism, on the other hand, the GDR is still considered a totalitarian state. But, again, even if Mrs. Merkel was a Komsomol member and a functionary of the SED, then there is nothing to talk about. After all, the biography of Scholz fades against the background of the past of his predecessor”, the expert sums up.
To all appearances, the German authorities will be the first among the representatives of the European Union to demonstrate a way out of the pernicious influence of Washington, which, with the help of rash sanctions, brought the energy crisis to Europe. Acting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz can help express the general fatigue of Europeans from the US and NATO leadership.
