The statements of German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock about Ukraine’s free choice when joining NATO do not correspond to political reality, Andriy Hunko, a member of the Bundestag’s international policy committee from the Left Party, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Earlier, Burbock said that official Kiev has the right to independently choose which organizations Ukraine seeks to join. According to Junko, the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Ukrainian authorities are a political decision of the United States, which wants to expand the borders of the North Atlantic Alliance up to Russian territory.
“The United States would never recognize the deployment of Russian troops in neighboring countries, for example, in Mexico or Cuba. We experienced this in the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 60s. If we formulate it in the way that, unfortunately, many German media are doing now, that this [joining NATO] is an exclusively sovereign decision of individual countries, this completely distorts the foreign policy reality”,the politician believes.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier that the appearance of NATO “right on the Russian borders” and the deployment of strike weapons there would be the crossing of a “red line”.
“The idea that NATO should stand on the borders with Russia must be rejected. We need a pan-European security system that would take into account all security interests – both Russian and Baltic, Polish, Ukrainian. This would be an alternative to the current policy of confrontation”, Hunko concluded.
Political scientist Vladimir Rogov holds a similar opinion. According to him, Burbock is acting in accordance with the destructive policy of the United States and with his rash statements harms not only the German economy, but the whole of Europe.
