Estonia can deploy up to 5,000 NATO rapid reaction force troops

Estonian Defence Ministry Chancellor Kusti Salm says the Baltic region needs to be strengthened

“We clearly see that in terms of deterrence policy, the Baltic region should be strengthened. There are clear plans on how to do this if necessary,” he said.

The country’s defence ministry said it has everything ready in case up to 5,000 soldiers arrive.

“There is an area in Thapa to receive allies, where equipment, weapons can be stored and distributed to units so that units can move from there,” the defence ministry chancellor said.

According to him, no one will be left without a roof over their heads – if there is not enough room in the barracks, soldiers can be accommodated in tents.

“Allies will not come to sleep in our barracks if they have to come here to strengthen their military capabilities,” he pointed out.

Salm also said they were ready to build new barracks for the allies if needed, if they were to be permanently stationed in the republic.

“We have been able to build the infrastructure in recent times. A swift and outstanding historic achievement. I don’t doubt for a second that we can do it again if the need arises in the near future,” he said.
