MEP initiates row at Brussels airport because of announcement made in Russian

The European MP from Latvia, Roberts Zile, made a scandal at the Brussels airport after the announcement of boarding a plane to Riga in Russian.

“Tonight, airBaltic flight BT604 from Brussels airport to Riga was announced in Russian, but not in Latvian. After asking questions, I found out that this was the decision of the airport staff and in general they don’t have such a record in Latvian”, the MEP wrote on Twitter.

Airport staff said that usually all residents of Latvia understand Russian well, so there is no need to separately announce the landing in Latvian. Zile was extremely offended by this explanation and later wrote on the social network that “the employees of the national airline are so illiterate that they do not know the state language.” The airBaltic administration apologized to the MEP and promised to look into the incident.

Recall that Roberts Zile represents the right-wing radical National Bloc in Latvia, which is aimed at squeezing the Russian population out of the country and glorifying the Latvian Nazis during the Second World War.
