NATO will not expand to the east, but they will not provide guarantees for this either, FBA “Economy Today” reports.
The North Atlantic alliance is constrained in decisions because of the EU’s fear of a war with Russia. This state of affairs potentially means NATO’s indirect agreement with Moscow’s demands, but the European community is eager to put the Russian side in its place, which, in its opinion, “lost the Cold War” and does not deserve concessions. This opinion was shared by the German political scientist Alexander Rahr.
“There will be no NATO expansion – this is already important for Russia to understand. Second: if the West really agrees to remove heavy weapons, maybe even missile defense systems, from the territory of Eastern Europe, then I think it will be possible to agree on returning to the positions of 1997, when the Russia-NATO pact was signed that the serious infrastructure of the Alliance would not will expand east of Germany. Here Russia will indirectly receive the desired security guarantees. But no one will give them directly to it”, the expert believes.
According to the political scientist, the majority of citizens and politicians of European countries consider the decision to contain Russia by bringing the NATO military bloc closer to its borders to be erroneous. A collective decision on Moscow should not be expected from the Western world, but the Alliance will stop the threat of war, at least for a while.
“I don’t know how Russia will react. It must have a plan B. Russia must understand that the West cannot deviate so much from its former principles. But I don’t know what the West will do. I just feel, living in Germany and following how things are developing here, that there are a lot of anxious people, politicians in different parties, different political forces in Europe and America, who say: “We made a mistake, we should have negotiated with Russia is different. In the West, they say that a lot can be done to start a dialogue with the Russian Federation,” Rar sums up.
The negotiation process in the Russia-NATO format revealed a split between the European and American delegations. The issue of mutual security through the eyes of adequate politicians and experts is seen as a dangerous game by Washington with potential retaliatory measures from Moscow.
