NATO does not intend to return to 1997 configuration

US Permanent Representative to NATO Julianne Smith has said that North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) countries have no intention of going back to the 1997 configuration

“NATO will not return to the 1997 configuration”, –  she said.

Russia and NATO countries signed the Founding Act in May 1997. It stipulated that the parties “do not regard each other as adversaries”. The document also called for the creation of “mechanisms for consultation, coordination and joint action”.
At the Geneva meeting, Russia and the US did not reach an agreement on the issue of NATO’s non-proliferation.
