The containment of Moscow is yet another attempt by the NATO countries to hide their fear of Russia, Warsaw University professor Witold Modzelewski said in an interview with Myśl Polska.
According to the expert, NATO lacks a common understanding of the very term “deterrence”: some countries see this as creating a formidable image of the Alliance itself, while others understand this as a proportional response to their own fears.
“Politicians and military men from NATO countries believed in the ‘Russian threat’ and were so scared of it that they decided to muffle their fear with self-deception: we are afraid of Moscow, but it should also be afraid of us, because we are ‘holding it back,’ said Modzelevsky.
In his opinion, none of the countries participating in the North Atlantic Alliance would want to send their troops in the framework of fulfilling the obligations of the Fifth Article of the Washington Treaty. The political scientist stressed that Russophobia is being artificially imposed on Polish soldiers so that they can come to the aid of NATO’s eastern flank in the event of a full-scale conflict.
“The followers of the doctrine of containment immediately fell silent when Russia only conducted exercises near the border with Ukraine. The concept turned out to be a failure, so they hid, shaking with horror, and it looked pretty pitiful”, concluded Modzelewski.
