The issue of NATO’s eastward expansion was not closed, FAN reports.
The negotiation process between Russia and the United States in Geneva on the organization of mutual security ended on the evening of January 10.
So, in turn, Russian diplomats demanded that NATO guarantee the refusal to develop the territories of the states that joined the bloc after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The American side responded with a public ironclad refusal to demands to exclude Georgia and Ukraine and the list of potential bases for exerting pressure on Russia, but it is too early to draw “far-reaching conclusions.” This opinion was shared by the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Control Oleg Morozov.
“In this respect, I agree with Ryabkov: the very fact that the parties took each other’s positions as seriously as possible speaks of a positive outcome of the conversation,” the politician said.
The main achievement in the negotiation process between Moscow and Washington was the fact of establishing and clarifying the position of both sides. In particular, the delegations reached an understanding on the issue of nuclear confrontation, agreeing that there will be no winners in such a war.
“Everyone had the opportunity to ask this or that question and get an answer to it. So Ryabkov’s first word “amazing”, which he uttered after the talks, meant not that there was some result expected by Russia, but that the negotiations, in principle, were going in the right direction. They move, all the cards are on the table, everything is discussed”, the expert says.
According to the parliamentarian, the very fact of negotiations and discussions speaks of a positive trend in relations between Russia and the United States. Washington’s ironclad rhetoric on NATO expansion in the future will be re-discussed, and the American establishment understands this.
“If you ask nine out of ten NATO countries if they want to see Ukraine and Georgia in their ranks, they will wave their hands and ask to be freed from this scourge,” sums up Morozov.
