The head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Berbock, has said that Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline does not meet European Union requirements, which is the reason why its certification process has been suspended
“Our federal government has clearly stated in the coalition agreement that energy projects in Germany must comply with European requirements, which also applies to Nord Stream 2. But at the moment this is not the case, so the certification process is on hold”, – Berbock told Italian newspaper La Stampa, TASS reported.
According to her, the issue of launching Nord Stream-2 is allegedly geopolitical in nature. Berbock added that the current German government shares the approach enshrined in a joint declaration with the US, according to which “effective tough measures will be taken against Russia together with European partners in case Moscow uses energy as a weapon or any aggressive actions in Ukraine.”
As previously reported by News Front, German residents have voiced their support for Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. According to the results of sociological research of the Institute Infratest dimap, about 70% of the inhabitants of the country call for completing the certification of the pipeline as soon as possible
