South African scientists have concluded that the ‘omicron’ strain signals the end of the crisis phase of the pandemic, Bloomberg writes
The medical team conducted a study at the hospital where the very first outbreak of omicron was recorded. So, they analysed records of 466 patients who fell ill in the current wave of COVID-19 and 3,976 previous cases of the disease.
The authors of the research paper said that the wave of infection moved at unprecedented speed and caused much milder disease than earlier strains.
“If this pattern persists, and is repeated worldwide, we are likely to see a complete separation of incidence and mortality rates”, – the experts summarised.
