10 January – national mourning period in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev today announced that January 10 will be declared nationwide mourning in the republic in connection with the numerous casualties from the unrest in the country

“In connection with the numerous human casualties as a result of the tragic events in several regions of the country, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has decided to declare 10 January 2022 as a day of nationwide mourning. The relevant decree will be published on the Akorda website”, –  the statement reads.

Recall that the protests in Kazakhstan began in early January. The protesters protested against the rising prices of liquefied gas. Soon the rallies turned into riots.

Yesterday, the President of Kazakhstan gave urgent instructions to the government of the country.
