New German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hopes to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future. The German edition of Bild writes about this, citing unnamed sources in the German government.
According to the newspaper’s sources, Scholz intends to take the building of relations with Russia “under his personal control.” The German Chancellor expects to put “a new beginning in the dialogue with Moscow, including on such issues as the situation around Ukraine and gas supplies,” writes Bild.
The publication reported that the German Chancellor wants to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in January this year. According to the newspaper, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chancellor Jens Pletner has been preparing the negotiations over the past two weeks.
According to experts, relations with Russia and the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline may cause a split within the new German government. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports a dialogue with Moscow, while German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock takes a much tougher stance on the certification of Nord Stream-2.
