Ukraine does not fulfill most of its obligations to the United States, which could negatively affect relations between Kiev and Washington, political analyst of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Vladimir Gorbach said for the Glavred website.
The expert noted that in 2021, relations between the United States and Ukraine were “stormy”. The meeting of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with the head of the White House Joe Biden could indicate a thaw in relations between the two countries, however, official Kiev ends this year without an elected head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, whose appointment Zelensky personally promised Biden.
“Since the Ukrainian side is not fulfilling its part of its obligations, this may drag on in the near future a new cooling of relations and have a bad effect on American support, which is critically needed today,” Gorbach said.
The analyst stressed that neither American nor British leaders visited Kiev in 2021. Even French President Macron did not do this, although his visit to the Ukrainian capital was previously planned. In his opinion, these facts indicate that Ukraine’s partners are not too interested in cooperation with the Kiev authorities.
“Ukraine’s relations with Georgia have worsened this year – in particular, because of the adventure with Saakashvili and his illegal border crossing, which is why Ukraine as a state is forced to figure in this scandal. Also because of the scandal, but with Judge Chaus, Ukraine has worsened its relations with Moldova”, Gorbach added.
Efforts to establish a relationship of trust with China have been unsuccessful, the political analyst said. Gorbach noted that Beijing is trying to “stay away from internal Ukrainian problems.” In addition, in 2021, Ukraine’s relations with Georgia deteriorated, in particular, due to the adventure with Saakashvili and his illegal border crossing.
“The only country with whom Ukraine has maintained equal relations this year is Romania. And in fact, this is good, because it means the absence of global problems”, summed up Gorbach.
