Security pledge: US intends to strengthen nuclear triad

The new concept of nuclear strategy is disadvantageous for Washington

The call of American scientists and engineers goes against the policy of the Pentagon and the White House. A few days earlier US President Joseph Biden received a letter in which experts in science and industry suggested revising the nuclear triad strategy. Political analyst Peter Hussey, in an article for The National Interest, laid out the reasons why the Office of the President would not accept the amendments.

The letter calls on the White House to abandon sole decision-making on the use of the nuclear arsenal, as well as a commitment not to use nuclear weapons first. The scientists and engineers also stress the need for the US to unilaterally disarm and withdraw support for a new land-based missile project.

The author of the article stresses that these amendments would deprive the U.S. of an advantage over Russia and China. Primarily, Washington will no longer be able to threaten Beijing and Moscow with a nuclear strike. The second drawback concerns the requirement to abolish unilateralism in decision-making on red buttons; in opinion of the author of the article, excessive bureaucracy will only prevent the US president from doing the right thing.

“The third idea is altogether reckless. The unilateral reduction of US strategic nuclear weapons to less than 1,000 missiles deprives the United States of the ability to dramatically build up its arsenal of nuclear warheads beyond the 1,550 permitted under the New START treaty”, –  Hussey noted.

The American analyst believes that the cancellation of funding for the new nuclear weapons project exposes the US to the impotence of its triad against the missile defences of China and Russia. Washington is technologically backward and needs an arms race at the moment.

“I have spoken to every US nuclear commander since 2010, and all of them have said they do not support reducing the arsenals of the US Armed Forces”, –  says Hussey.

U.S. scientists and engineers will not be heard by the White House because of the U.S. establishment’s need for a nuclear triad. There is no way Washington will want to lose its most effective deterrence and pressure strategy.
