Russian Permanent Representative commented on EU silence on missile defence deployment in Romania and Poland

Russian Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov suggested that the EU has no explanation for the missile defense system deployment in Poland

“When the Americans deployed an anti-missile defense system in Romania, which is also capable of launching medium-range missiles in the direction of Russia, with a small retooling, the European Union did not say a word. I would venture to guess that it will not say a word, and when a similar system will appear in Poland in the coming months, it may well happen so”, – Chizhov said at an online briefing at the Russia Today news agency.

On 17 December, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a treaty with the United States and an agreement with NATO on security guarantees. The documents have already been handed over to Washington and its allies.

One of the clauses of the draft agreement suggests that NATO should provide guarantees that the alliance will not expand into Ukraine. According to the deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, if NATO and the US do not respond to Russia’s demand for guarantees of security, it could lead to a new round of confrontation.
