Germany says Lukashenko missed his chance to free himself from the “Russian embrace”

German diplomat Christoph Heusgen said that Germany and Europe did everything possible to reform Belarus

“There was a chance. Lukashenko missed it. Germany and Europe did everything, for example, within the framework of the so-called Eastern Partnership, to give Belarus a chance to reform the state, bring the country closer to the global economy and free it from the Russian embrace”, –  said the diplomat.

But, he said, the Belarusian president was afraid that liberalisation and democratisation of his country could cause him personal political damage.

“That is why he became totally economically and politically dependent on Russia. Ukraine has taken a different path.”
