The die is cast: British analysts have “counted” Russia’s warheads

Russia-NATO relations have reached a boiling point, reports PolitRussia

The British edition of the Daily Express stresses that the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis has reached its maximum point of tension in recent months. Observers draw attention to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent words about Russia’s de facto enforcement of red lines by the NATO bloc.

“Russia stresses that its actions are purely defensive in nature because NATO could deploy missiles in Ukraine that would take only four to five minutes to reach Moscow”, –  the foreign publication writes.

Moscow has once again stressed that it will not tolerate the deployment of weapons on the Ukrainian border and that the very invitation for Kiev to join any of the pro-Western blocs or alliances is a red line. The Kremlin’s tough stance on security has prompted British observers to think about estimates of Russia’s nuclear capabilities.

“Analysts at the Federation of American Scientists’ Nuclear Information Project estimate that Russia currently possesses the largest number of nuclear warheads in the world”, –  a British tabloid article points out. – “Mr Putin is said to have a total of 6,257 warheads, Mr Biden has 5,550, and Britain lags behind: it has only 225.”

Remarkably, most readers of the British tabloid are in solidarity with Russia’s position, often citing Russian missiles in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example.

“We called JFK’s response to Soviet missiles in Cuba reasonable, so why does Putin have less of a point? It’s quite understandable that Russia doesn’t want missiles on its doorstep. Would you want your enemies to be at such close range that there would be no way to retaliate?” –  a reader asks.

Internet users also discussed Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, agreeing with the Russian president’s position on this issue. According to the discussion participants, Kiev should remain neutral in its relations with the West. Some believe a buffer zone on Ukrainian soil would help resolve the conflict.

“Moscow doesn’t need or want war, Russia spends about as much on its armed forces as Britain does on its army, despite the fact that Russia’s territory to defend is much larger. It is the Americans who desperately need a war in Europe. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, all of Western Europe stopped buying American-made weapons. This has been a disaster for the United States”, –  the readers conclude.

Most European citizens understand what NATO’s eastward expansion could lead to. The highest Western establishment must give up pressure under the threat of an imminent and varied response from Moscow.
