Russia will deliver its demands for NATO’s non-expansion to the east in a different way
The US is ignoring Russia’s demands for mutual security, but there is still hope that Moscow’s conditions will be accepted. However, in case the negotiation process fails, the Russian country will implement a backup plan of geopolitical strategy on the Ukrainian issue. This opinion was expressed by RIA Novosti columnist Petr Akopov.
Russia is considering a scenario of recognising Donbass in order to incorporate the Luhansk and Donetsk republics into the Russian Federation.
“But this would depend on the general course of the fight for Ukraine. If negotiations on security guarantees break down, Moscow could break the whole scheme by recognising the independence of Donbass or incorporating it into the Russian Federation altogether according to a referendum”, – the expert believes.
The need to protect strategic interests in the western direction is Moscow’s priority. The Ukrainian crisis needs to be stopped by a cunning geopolitical plan. However, the NATO negotiations to date still leave hopes of a compromise between the West and Russia.
