NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has decided to convene a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) on January 12, Anadolu reports, citing a source in the North Atlantic Alliance.
The agency’s source said that the North Atlantic Alliance is in contact with Russia on the issue of holding the meeting. Earlier, the NATO press service announced that on January 12-13, a meeting of the NATO Military Committee will be held at the level of the chiefs of general staff of the alliance member states.
Earlier, Stoltenberg stressed that the North Atlantic Alliance does not intend to compromise with Russia on the issue of Ukraine’s joining NATO, since Kiev “has the right to independently choose its own path.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that one of the main issues of the upcoming meeting will be the topic of non-expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance to the east. Recall that earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry handed over to the United States drafts of a bilateral treaty on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation and NATO countries.
