The number of applications for political asylum in Germany has increased by 33% over the past year, writes DW.
“In the first nine months of this year, 100,240 such petitions were filed – 33% more than in the same period in 2020,” the European statistical office Eurostat said.
It is also noted that Germany was the first in the ranking in terms of the number of applications: in total, Germany accounted for 28.4% of the initial applications that were filed in the European Union.
In the first nine months of 2021, the total number of asylum applications increased by 15 percent to 355,955. In addition to Germany, refugees are heading to France (73,255 applications), Spain (39,755 applications) and Italy (28,645 applications). In Hungary, only 30 initial applications were filed in all three quarters.
Most of the asylum seekers are citizens of Afghanistan, where the radical Islamist Taliban * took control of the government in 2021. Also, citizens of Syria, where a civil war has been going on for a long time, apply for asylum. According to Eurostat, citizens of these two countries accounted for a third of all applications for asylum in the European Union.
