Lies and bias – foreign media distorting Putin’s demands for NATO

Moscow’s tough demands for “security guarantees” have become the most popular headline in the Western media

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a tough response to a representative of the British TV channel Sky News during his annual grand press conference. The reporter asked if Russia was capable of providing guarantees that Moscow had no desire to “invade Ukraine”.

“You have to give us guarantees. You! And immediately. Now. Not to stall for decades”, –  was the answer given by Vladimir Putin.

President Putin’s response became the most popular quote in the Western media and was immediately distorted through the prism of anti-Russian policies imposed by the West. Foreign publications interpreted the words of the Russian guarantor as Moscow’s desire to obtain serious concessions from the US and NATO.

“Vladimir Putin says Eastern Ukraine is Russian and demands ‘security guarantees’ from NATO”, –  reads the headline of a British Daily Mail article.

The British columnists’ desire to sensationalise President Putin’s false accusation was quickly uncovered by attentive readers. The publication was condemned in comments for being biased towards the Russian leader’s reasonable demands.

“I followed his speech and he said nothing about Ukraine being Russian. He said NATO was threatening Russia by placing missiles on Russia’s doorstep. He wants guarantees from NATO. Sounds reasonable”, –  condemned the shouting headline online.

Readers suggested NATO should back off, suggesting it should heed Russia’s warnings about meddling in US-Mexican relations and the escalating crisis between Washington and Texas. The US needs to hear that demands for security guarantees would not have been made in such a harsh form if not for the aggressive attitude of the Alliance.
