Out of the question: Estonian President Alar Karis has spoken out against discussing Russia’s security proposals
In a statement, the president said it was easy to deal with Russia’s demands. They should be put aside and speak their minds.
“If we start discussing them, I think we will have a problem. Eventually, at some point, relations with Russia have to come into some reasonable framework after all. Nobody wants an escalation. But discussing these points, I think, is out of the question”, – said Karis.
According to the state leader, there have been allegedly “very strong signals” coming from Russia almost every day in recent times.
“It’s a long list of not wishes, but downright commands. The only weapon against this is that the Western countries, especially the NATO countries, are united in this respect and this information will reach all sides in the shortest possible time”.
Furthermore, the Estonian head of state called not to be afraid of Russia, but to contain it.
“I don’t think we should be afraid of anyone, but we need to engage in containment. We must keep up with our allies and not let them divide us, which is understandably one of the goals of today’s Russia: to divide us against each other. Start negotiating with each one separately and suddenly someone will really start negotiating. Nothing should happen behind the backs of those countries about which decisions are being made.”
