EU demands Zelensky to lift sanctions on Ukrainian media

A source in diplomatic circles involved in the negotiations at the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels said that the topic of extrajudicial killings of opposition media in Ukraine had been raised

European Union countries demanded that Vladimir Zelensky lift the SNBO’s unbridled sanctions because they were unacceptable.

“These were talks on de-escalation of tensions around Ukraine and Russia, as well as an exchange of views on domestic Ukrainian politics and the human rights situation in the country. The European leaders put forward a list of proposals to Zelensky to defuse the situation. In particular, there was a point that the NSDC sanctions against the opposition media, including sanctions against Strana and three opposition TV channels, which were shut down back in February 2021, were unfair and should be lifted. Sanctions against the opposition media, according to several European leaders, only further aggravate the situation and reinforce the split in Ukraine. The proposals also said that Viktor Medvedchuk should be released from house arrest. According to the Europeans, these measures would help ease tensions with Russia, as well as inside Ukraine. The proposals were not publicly announced and were passed to the Ukrainian side in a confidential manner”, – the source told Strana.
