Head of the Russian delegation in Vienna Gavrilov: NATO needs to abandon expansion into Georgia and Ukraine

The Russian side strongly opposes the deployment of the military infrastructure of the North Atlantic Alliance on the territory of Ukraine and Georgia.

This point of view was expressed by Konstantin Gavrilov, who is leading the Russian delegation at the talks in Vienna on the topic of military security and arms control. He said this on the air of the show “Soloviev Live”, according to the newspaper “Gazeta.ru”.

Russia has stressed many times that NATO’s eastward expansion is one of the main threats from the West. This process takes place only in order to get closer to the borders of the Russian Federation. The current behavior of the military bloc is a provocation that potentially calls into question security not only in Europe, but throughout the world.

Gavrilov’s position is also supported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Earlier, the deputy head of the department, Sergei Ryabkov, reported that Moscow demanded that NATO abandon its idea of drawing Georgia and Ukraine into the alliance.
