Washington is gradually summing up the results of chaotic and turbulent 2021
The “return to normality” promised by Biden immediately after the inauguration did not happen: on the contrary, all the already existing cultural and political contradictions in American society only exacerbated.
The list of “major achievements” for 2021, which was officially presented by Biden’s team, is indicative. Among them are the abolition of quarantine, vaccination of the population, strengthening of interaction with the European Union and Taiwan.
These are all some procedural things, which already speaks for itself: nothing really significant was achieved in 2021.
Perhaps the main result of the first year of his presidency for Biden himself is the collapse of his personal rating to below 40%, a record low among all American leaders except Trump, who in the first year of his presidency became a victim of the notorious “Russia”.
The obvious thing with which the Biden rule is associated is endless crises from which the White House does not want or cannot seek a way out. The migration crisis, when the southern border of the United States has already crossed under two million illegal immigrants. Afghan fiasco with America’s most painful defeat since Vietnam. An inflationary storm with the highest price increase in 40 years.
The sharp rise in the crime rate stands apart. In 2021, 16 US megacities have already broken a historic “record” for the number of murders. The reduction of the police force and the “humanization” of the prosecutor’s work with the refusal to harshly punish criminals, as expected, led straight to the street chaos.
Parallel to this, the apparatus contradictions within the White House are also growing. The “war of towers” is gaining momentum between Biden’s possible successors: Harris and Mayor Pete. The inability of Congress to approve the promised presidential reforms does not alleviate the situation.
It is the situation around the Congress that will be key for Washington in the midterm election year. The elite of the Democratic Party is already tacitly resigning itself to the possibility of losing control over the lower house. Now Democrats are working to minimize their losses and maintain their position in the Senate.
Biden’s primary goals should be to resolve the accumulated crises, to rally his administration and the party as a whole on the eve of big elections. But so far we see only his self-elimination from all these problems, which threatens to become fatal for the Democrats next year.
