Chinese Foreign Minister says Taiwan to return home

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made statements on the situation with Taiwan at the opening ceremony of the conference on the international situation and Chinese diplomacy in 2021.

According to the minister, “Taiwan is a traveler” who will eventually return home, and not a chess piece in the games of other political forces.

“A new round of tension has arisen around the situation in the Taiwan Strait, the root of the problem lies in the fact that the Taiwanese authorities are trying to rely on Washington in their quest for “independence”, and the United States and other individual countries intend to use Taiwan to control China”, Wang Yi said.

He also noted that all these contradictory actions changed the status quo and undermined peace in the Taiwan Strait, as well as violated the consensus of the international community and the basic norms of international relations.

“Taiwan is a traveler who will eventually return home, not a chess piece used by others. China must be unified, and it will inevitably be unified”, the minister summed up.

Recall that official relations between the central government of the PRC and its island province of Taiwan ended in 1949, after the Kuomintang forces, which had been defeated in the civil war with the Chinese Communist Party, led by Chiang Kai-shek, moved to Taiwan.

However, business and informal contacts between the island and mainland China resumed already in the late 1980s.
