Only Ukraine and NATO have the right to decide the vector of their relations – Ukrainian Foreign Ministry

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that only Kiev and NATO members have the right to determine the vector of further development of their relations, including the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the alliance

“The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the Russian draft treaty with the USA and the agreement with NATO on so-called security guarantees circulated by the Russian Foreign Ministry. In connection with the provisions of these drafts, which concern our state, we stress that only Ukraine and NATO members have the right to decide the vector of further development of their relations, including in the issue of Ukraine gaining membership in the alliance”, –  Nikolenko wrote on Facebook.

He is confident that the same position is shared by the North Atlantic Alliance itself, which is confirmed, in particular, in its statement of 16 December 2021.

“The same applies to Ukraine’s exclusive sovereign right to independently determine the development of relations with foreign states at the bilateral level, including in the sphere of military cooperation”, –  the Foreign Ministry representative said.

According to him, the main security problem of the Euro-Atlantic space at the moment is the Russian escalation along the Ukrainian border.
