The reckless statement by US President George W. Bush was the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis. This is reported by PolitRussia.
The policy of “containment of Russia” according to the Ukrainian scenario is more likely to provoke Moscow to retaliate rather than force it to abandon its principled position on NATO enlargement. This opinion was expressed by the American political scientist and publicist Daniel Larison in an article on the Antiwar portal.
“Increased military support from the US and NATO to Ukraine is far more likely to provoke Moscow than deter it,” the observer argues.
According to Larison, the United States, with the support of its European partners, has contributed to the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis for decades. The expansion of the primordially anti-Russian NATO bloc in the eastern direction is logically perceived by Moscow as an immediate threat to the security and interests of a sovereign state.
“Russia is not asking or demanding anything that the US government would not require under similar conditions. If a strong hostile power were to arm a neighboring country, promising to include it in its military bloc, this would be regarded as a real and serious danger. The least that our government could wish in such a scenario is that the neighboring state would not be accepted into a hostile bloc”, the American political scientist believes.
The American observer regards the US promises to soon include Ukraine in the North Atlantic Alliance as bait for the Ukrainian establishment in order to further increase tensions along the Russian borders.
“The current crisis that Ukraine is going through are the consequences of Bush’s arrogant “freedom program”, which come around almost twenty years later,” the American political scientist is convinced. – Attempts to pull Kiev into a western orbit have largely led to instability in Europe. This does not at all meet the national security interests of the United States and its allies, and for Ukraine it turned out to be a disaster at all”, the journalist specifies.
The only way out to eliminate possible catastrophic consequences is to establish the neutrality of the Ukrainian authorities in relation to the United States and Russia, Larison said.
“Agreeing to neutrality would also help resolve the current conflict in southeastern Ukraine and enable Kiev to resume normal relations with Moscow. Yes, it would be a compromise with Russia, but the necessary compromise is the basis of successful diplomacy”, he sums up.
