US and Ukraine press new German government to unblock lethal arms shipments

Earlier, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel refused to lift the ban on arms supplies to Ukraine

Political scientist Maxim Zharov told FAN that there is nothing surprising in Germany’s blocking supplies of lethal weapons to Ukraine under Merkel.

Under the chancellor, Germany had previously supported the Ukrainian government, which came to power in a coup in 2014. However, at the same time, Berlin and Paris are key guarantors of the Minsk agreements, which block Kiev’s attempts to start a new war in Donbass.

“However, all these leaks to the German media now suggest that the US and Ukraine are putting pressure on the new German government to unblock the supply of lethal weapons. In fact, Olaf Scholz’s government is being forced to refuse to be the key guarantor of the Minsk agreements,” the expert explained.
In this way, the political analyst noted, the way may be opened for rewriting the Minsk agreements in favour of Ukraine or for their complete rejection and replacing them with a new document agreed in the Normandy format with the participation of the USA.
