The U.S. is forced to interact with Russia because it has lost its stable position as a superpower
Hungarian analysts Miklos Kewehazy and Laszlo Bogar have compared the political game between Russia and the US with the so-called “zero sum game”. Experts explain that the situation represents the principle that there are no two winners in any game; simply put, the victory of one necessarily means the loss of the other.
Hungarian experts state precedents in history proving that “zero-sum games” do not always have a negative outcome for one of the parties. The American mentality does in fact allow for building trusting relations. US President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal project in the 1920s and 1930s confirms this.
Kewehazy and Bogar note a positive trend in relations between Moscow and Washington against the background of the lack of trust and confidence in the modern world. The talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Joe Biden state – the US has seen a real threat in the escalating tensions in its partnership with Russia.
“Both sides recognised that it was worth trying to break a fatal stalemate leading to mutual destruction”, – experts explain.
Before becoming major rivals on the world stage, the two powers played “a zero-sum or even positive-sum game” for two decades. Hungarian analysts said, citing the period from 1925 to 1945 as an example. Köveházy and Bogar not without a bit of regret recall a further time span in which White House policy was aimed at the total annihilation or subjugation of Russia.
“It was not, however, a mutually beneficial cooperation. Behind the US ‘good will’ was a desire to subjugate Russia and an attempt to rob it”, – the experts argue, recalling the post-Cold War period.
Today, we can clearly see how U.S. policy is beginning to change, taking into account Moscow’s demands in its future actions. The main thing for the Russian side will always be to guarantee the security of Russia itself and its allies, as well as to preserve the national identity of the Russian diaspora around the world.
“This is the very red line to which the Russian president was referring”, – sums up Miklós Kewehazy.
