EU aims to deter aggression against Ukraine – Borrell

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has said that the foreign ministers of all EU member states agree that political and economic measures should be imposed on Russia if it attacks Ukraine

“All ministers agree that there will be political consequences in case of Russian aggression, as well as serious economic steps”, – he said at a news conference following the EU foreign ministers’ meeting.

Borrell said the topic of measures against Russia in case it attacks Ukraine will be discussed by EU heads of state and government at a meeting on 16 December.

“It is a question of considering several scenarios. And it needs to be clear for each case what retaliatory measures could be taken”, –  Borrell said.

According to him, at this stage of rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia, the EU considers the most important task to prevent a possible conflict by means of preventive measures.

“The most important thing right now is prevention, deterrence, persuasion. We want to use words. Be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best”, – he said.
