The launch of the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2 will deprive Ukraine of the opportunity to buy gas through the reverse from Europe, observers of The National Interest said.
According to the magazine’s experts Janusz Bugayski and Margarita Assenova, after the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline passes the required certification procedure and is launched, all gas supplies from Russia to Europe will be made bypassing Ukrainian territory. Such a maneuver will deprive Kiev of the opportunity to purchase reverse gas from European countries.
“This means that Moscow will control how much gas through Nord Stream 2 Ukraine’s neighbors will receive in order to ensure that they don’t have surplus fuel that they could resell to Kiev,” the National Interest noted.
Experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have calculated that Ukraine’s annual income from the transit of Russian gas will decrease by more than $ 1 billion after the launch of Nord Stream 2. Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba announced Kiev’s intention to receive compensation from the Russian Federation after the launch of the pipeline.
The Prime Minister of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig, in an interview with Der Spiegel, criticized the preparation of new sanctions against Nord Stream 2. According to her, Germany is in dire need of Russian blue fuel. The newly elected German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin intends to support the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
