The newly elected German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said that he does not rule out sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the event that Russia “invades” Ukrainian territory.
“We take a very clear position. We strive to ensure that everyone respects the principle of inviolability of borders. Everyone realizes that there will be consequences if things are different”, Scholz said on the Welt TV channel.
According to him, Berlin is ready to use the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2 as an instrument of pressure. However, Scholz stressed that the upcoming launch of the pipeline is taking place according to “a perfectly orderly procedure, which is now carefully moving forward, and the Federal Network Agency will soon make a decision on certification.”
Also, the German Chancellor called to prevent confrontation in Ukraine and to respect the principle of inviolability of borders, which “must be respected by everyone, as it increases overall security.”
