Zelensky wants to deprive people with Russian passports of citizenship

President Volodymyr Zelensky has introduced an urgent draft law – On Ukrainian Citizenship – in parliament

It outlines the procedure for obtaining and revoking a Ukrainian passport. Among other things, the document introduces heavy fines and restriction of freedom for Ukrainians who have accepted Russian citizenship. In the first place, this innovation will affect residents of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics.

“Citizenship will be taken away for the use on the territory of the country by an adult citizen of “foreigner’s documents, as a result of which a threat to national security and national interests of Ukraine is created”. Also, the passport can be revoked for establishing the fact of military service under contract in Russia”, –  the draft law reads.

There will also be a fine for late declaration of foreign citizenship – violators will be fined up to 100 non-taxable minimums (4,500 rubles).

A fine of up to 5,000 untaxed minimum wages (about 230,000 rubles) or limitation of freedom for up to three years will be imposed for inaccurate information on foreign citizenship.
