White House press secretary Jen Psaki has said America has decided to stage a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Olympics in China
“The Biden administration will not be sending any diplomatic or official representatives to the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing”, – Psaki said.
At the same time, she clarified that the US government’s decision does not apply to athletes who will be able to travel to Beijing to compete.
“Team USA athletes have our full support. We will support them 100%, we will cheer for them from home”, – said the spokeswoman.
The Olympics will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022. The Chinese capital was chosen to host it at the International Olympic Committee’s session in Kuala Lumpur on 31 July 2015.
