No deaths from COVID-19 omicron strain reported so far – WHO

World Health Organisation Health Emergencies Programme Director Michael Ryan has said that no fatalities from the new strain of the coronavirus Omicron have yet been reported globally at this time

“It may take weeks for WHO to determine the contagiousness of the new strain. We’re going to get the answers everyone wants”, –  Ryan was quoted as saying by Kommersant.
According to Anthony Fauci, the chief infectious disease officer of the United States, the first data on the omicron strain of coronavirus infection is “a little bit encouraging”. The specialist added that tentatively this variant of the virus is less dangerous than the delta strain. Fauci noted that cases of infection with the omicron strain have been identified in almost a third of US states.
Anatoly Altstein, virologist at Gamaleya Research Center for EIA, has suggested that the coronavirus pandemic may end with the spread of the omicron strain COVID-19, which is less dangerous in terms of mortality from the effects of infection.
As previously reported by News Front, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Russia has been declining for the fourth week in a row. In the last seven days, 3.3% fewer COVID-19 cases have been detected than in the previous seven days.
